September 2008 School Opening and WINGS Updates

As you know, we are making the “big move” to the new school site at 16th and Lombard Streets this September. Such a big move, as well as a very tight construction schedule, will make the beginning of the school year later than usual.
Here are the related school opening dates for Fall 2008:
- Construction is anticipated to be fully completed on August 29
- School for grades 1-8 will be open on Monday, September 15
- Kindergarten students will begin school on Wednesday, September 17
With this notice, we inform you that school will not begin any earlier than September 15, 2008. With a newly renovated building, we must allow time for all systems (HVAC, security, cafeteria, trash, recycling, etc.) to be operating well and for our teachers to set up classrooms. At the present time, the physical move of our desks, boxes, etc., will take place at the end of August and the beginning of September. Teachers will be in training as well as setting up their rooms the first two weeks of September. Kindergarten teachers will have an opportunity to meet with parents in preparation for the school year.
Our biggest hurdles have been cleared; however, as with all construction and renovation, problems can occur. Please be aware that if a problem occurs that delays our September 15 opening, we will inform you. At the present time, we do not foresee this.
We will also take this late opening opportunity to invite students to tours in the new school in early September before school starts. We will have our certificate of occupancy and there will be no hazards for children other than lots of boxes; there may even be opportunities for students to help create signs, etc. We will post the tour schedule in early June so that you will be able to choose daytime or early evening “kid” tours for September.
WINGS After School Update
ICS is applying for a license to operate the WINGS after school program in the new building for 2008-2009. As noted previously to parents, our intention is to continue this program for one more year to help parents transition to the new site. As posted previously, there are many after school sites in the vicinity. It is important to note that we are not allowed to apply for this new license from DPW until we have a certificate of occupancy.
We will not have a certificate of occupancy until mid August or early September 2008. We have a strong record with DPW for the licensing of our program; however, cannot predict that we will definitively have a license in September. Please remember that WINGS programming always begins one week after school opens, therefore IF we have a license, WINGS will open on September 22nd. Please “stay tuned” for news on our progress to get a license.
