Independence Charter School

Elsie Stern earned her B.A. at Yale University and her Ph.D. in Biblical Studies at the University of Chicago. She is currently on the faculty of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, a progressive seminary in Wyncote. Before taking this position, Elsie taught at Fordham University in New York City and worked at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to her academic work, she has taught widely in community settings around the country and abroad. Elsie also served for ten years on the board of a non-profit organization where she led a strategic planning process, chaired the development committee and served as chair of the board for five years. Elsie has been involved at ICS since her daughter Sarah entered kindergarten. Elsie has served on the library committee year and volunteers regularly in her daughter’s class. Her time at ICS has made her incredibly grateful for the commitment and talent of the ICS staff and the thoughtful decision making of its board. Elsie and her family live in Fairmount. Her daughter is in the Spanish Enhanced program.
